Designing Safer Homes for Aging Adults with Vision Loss

Sep 1, 2026

As more older adults choose to age in place, creating home environments that support safety and independence becomes increasingly important. A multidisciplinary Duke University Bass Connections team brought together expertise from occupational therapy, vision care, research, and industry to address the unique challenges faced by individuals with low vision. Through the development of a functional vision assessment, training resources for occupational therapists, and practical home modification guides, the team created tools that help translate clinical knowledge into real-world solutions. Their work demonstrates how collaborative, user-centered innovation can improve accessibility, enhance quality of life, and empower individuals to navigate their homes with greater confidence and security. This team was led by Omar Mohiuddin and Diane Whitaker (School of Medicine: Eye Center), as well as Ed Pagani and Victor Taylor (Office for External Partnerships).
